Biosilicate® Glass-Ceramic Foams From Refined Alkali Activation and Gel Casting

چکیده
Biosilicate® glass-ceramics are among the most valid alternatives to 45S5 Bioglass. They combine a similar bioactivity and bioresorbability as with superior mechanical strength, owing crystallization of Na–Ca silicate phase. This may be experienced upon viscous flow sintering fine glass powders, thus configuring sinter-crystallization process. As is seldom complete, can also applied semicrystalline powders. The sintering/crystallization combination exploited for shaping highly porous bodies, used scaffolds bone tissue engineering, in form foams. present study aims at exploring gel-casting process, based on room temperature foaming powders suspended “weakly alkaline” (1 M NaOH) aqueous solution, followed by 1,000°C. gelation suspensions attributed formation hydrated compounds, later decomposed firing. Amorphous provided more intense than ones, promoted homogeneous foaming, stimulated substantial homogeneity foamed samples was assessed using micro-tomography further improved casting (“foam casting”) before setting.

Bioactive Glass-Ceramic Scaffolds from Novel ‘Inorganic Gel Casting’ and Sinter-Crystallization
Highly porous wollastonite-diopside glass-ceramics have been successfully obtained by a new gel-casting technique. The gelation of an aqueous slurry of glass powders was not achieved according to the polymerization of an organic monomer, but as the result of alkali activation. The alkali activation of a Ca-Mg silicate glass (with a composition close to 50 mol % wollastonite-50 mol % diopside, w...
متن کاملBioactive Glass-Ceramic Foam Scaffolds from ‘Inorganic Gel Casting’ and Sinter-Crystallization
Highly porous bioactive glass-ceramic scaffolds were effectively fabricated by an inorganic gel casting technique, based on alkali activation and gelification, followed by viscous flow sintering. Glass powders, already known to yield a bioactive sintered glass-ceramic (CEL2) were dispersed in an alkaline solution, with partial dissolution of glass powders. The obtained glass suspensions underwe...
متن کاملDevelopment and mechanical characterization of novel ceramic foams fabricated by gel-casting
Porous ceramic materials are of considerable interest for a variety of chemical and industrial applications in extremely harsh conditions, particularly at very high temperatures for long times. A modified gelcasting process employing agar as a natural gelling agent and polyethylene spheres as pore formers was exploited to produce porous ceramic bodies. Alumina and alumina-ZrO2 (AZ) powders were...
متن کاملFabrication of high–strength alumina composite foams through gel–casting process
A water–soluble gelatin combined with polyethylene microspheres were developed to prepare alumina composite foam. Gelatin was used as the gelling agent and polyethylene was used as pore making template. On the other hand, kaolin was used to provide green strength and CuO was applied to decrease the required temperature as a sinter aid. Alumina bodies need elevate temperature for sintering, incr...
متن کاملProduction of porous hydroxyapatite by the gel-casting of foams and cytotoxic evaluation.
This study presents the manufacture of highly porous hydroxyapatite by a novel technique that employs the foaming of suspensions prior to the in situ polymerization of organic monomers contained in the compositions. This method produces strong gelled bodies with up to 90% porosity that can withstand machining in the green state. Complex-shaped components can be obtained if the process comprises...
